Jay-Z Clinches Second Emmy With Outstanding Directing Win For Rihanna’s Super Bowl Halftime Show

Renowned rapper and music mogul Jay-Z has added another accolade to his impressive list of achievements, as he recently secured an Emmy Award for his role in directing Rihanna’s electrifying Super Bowl LVII halftime show.

The 2023 performance, which captivated audiences during the iconic sporting event, has now earned Jay-Z the prestigious Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Award for ‘Outstanding Directing for a Variety Special.’

The award, presented at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles this past Sunday, January 7, marks Jay-Z’s second Emmy win, further solidifying his multifaceted talent and creative influence. The halftime show, which took place at Arizona’s State Farm Stadium, showcased Jay-Z’s exceptional directorial vision and was a testament to the collaborative artistry of both Jay-Z and Rihanna.

The 54-year-old has received numerous other awards and nominations for his work in music and entertainment, including 24 Grammy Awards (making him one of the most awarded artists in Grammy history), NAACP’s President’s Award, induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame (making him the first rapper to receive this honour), and a Tony Award nomination.

Hov, who won the award for Outstanding Directing for a Variety Special alongside his co-director Hamish Hamilton, was up against Joel Gallen (Chris Rock: Selective Outrage), Linda Mendoza (Wanda Sykes: I’m an Entertainer), Paul Miller (Carol Burnett: 90 Years of Laughter + Love) and Glenn Weiss (The Oscars).

Hamilton has been in charge of directing the Super Bowl halftime show since 2010, overseeing performances by renowned artists such as Beyoncé, The Weeknd, Bruno Mars, Justin Timberlake, The Black Eyed Peas, Shakira, Jennifer Lopez, and the critically acclaimed Super Bowl LVI halftime show featuring Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Mary J. Blige, and Kendrick Lamar.
