Miho Nakayama, the Japanese actress and singer, was found dead in her Tokyo home on Friday, sending shockwaves through the entertainment world.
The 54-year-old, known for her iconic role in the 1995 film Love Letter, was discovered seated in her bathtub, surrounded by water.
Her death has left fans and colleagues reeling as authorities investigate the circumstances.
Nakayama had been expected to perform at a Christmas concert in Osaka that same day, but the event was abruptly cancelled, citing “health issues.” Just days before, she had taken the stage in Yokohama, seemingly in good health.
Her sudden passing came after a representative and close friend visited her home when she missed an appointment.
They found her body inside, with the front door locked. Police have ruled out foul play, though the cause of death remains under investigation.
Her agency expressed deep sorrow, stating, “We are shocked and devastated by this unexpected tragedy. The cause of her death is still being investigated.”
Miho Nakayama’s career spanned decades, making her a household name in Japan. She first rose to fame in the mid-1980s with the television drama Maido Osawagase Shimasu and became one of the faces of Japan’s “trendy drama” era.
These dramas, which often centered on romantic themes and cultural trends, solidified her place in Japanese television history.
Affectionately called “Miporin” by her fans, Nakayama also found success in music, launching her career in 1985 with the single C.
She quickly became a pop idol, churning out hit songs throughout the 1980s and 1990s, including Waku Waku Sasete (1986). One of her biggest hits, the 1992 single Sekaiju no Dare Yori Kitto (Surely More Than Anyone in the World), a collaboration with the rock band Wands, sold over 1.8 million copies.
Her musical success continued with Tada Nakitaku Naruno (I Just Want to Cry) in 1994, which also sold more than a million copies.
