It’s the President’s Call – Ofosu Kwakye on Possible IGP Replacement

In Ghanaian politics, leadership transitions often come with major shake-ups in key institutions, especially in the security sector.

The conversation around the possible replacement of Inspector General of Police (IGP) George Akuffo Dampare has sparked public debate, with many wondering whether such a move would be politically motivated or based on performance.

Addressing this issue, Felix Ofosu Kwakye, Minister in Charge of Government Communication, stated that a change in IGP would not necessarily be a result of wrongdoing.

Speaking on Channel One TV with Bernard Avle, he explained that leadership changes in security agencies are routine whenever a new government takes over.

“That one is within the preview of the president. Conventionally, the heads of all the security agencies have changed when there is a change of government, and I don’t think there are any qualms about it.

I don’t know what the president intends to do in that regard, but if it happens, I don’t think anybody will be surprised. It will not be against the norm,” he said.

His comments align with historical patterns in Ghana, where successive governments have appointed new security chiefs to align with their administration’s vision.

However, Dampare, who was appointed in 2021, has been widely praised for his reforms and efforts to improve police professionalism. Some Ghanaians believe that removing him without cause could disrupt progress in the police service.

Despite these concerns, Ofosu Kwakye insisted that the decision to change the IGP wouldn’t necessarily mean he has done anything wrong.

“I don’t have any personal views about him. As I speak, I don’t know of evidence of specific wrongdoing against him. He does not need to have done wrong for him to be changed.

So if he’s changed, it is not because he has done some wrong. It is just that the President may think that a new direction is needed at the police headquarters or a direction is needed in the leadership of the police service,” he clarified.
