Ebi Bright, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Parliamentary Candidate for Tema Central, has expressed disappointment in President Akufo-Addo’s Year of Return initiative, calling it a staged effort that lacks real, long-term impact for the creative arts and tourism sectors.
Speaking during an interview on Starr Today with Efia Tutuwaa Danso and Joshua Kodjo Mensah, Ebi Bright criticized the focus on tourism, which she believes has been centered solely around December events, neglecting the potential for year-round cultural promotion.
“I think it’s disappointing because it’s all staged,” Ebi remarked, referring to the government’s widely promoted initiative aimed at reconnecting the African diaspora with their roots.
Launched in 2019, the Year of Return drew significant global attention and attracted thousands of people from across the globe to visit Ghana. However, Ebi feels the program’s impact has been superficial and not inclusive of the broader Ghanaian population.
“He’s done a Year of Return, but this has nothing to do with you and I,” she argued, pointing to a disconnect between the initiative and ordinary Ghanaians who, in her view, have not directly benefited from its success.
The initiative, she suggested, was primarily designed for international audiences and lacked substantial engagement with local communities.
Ebi Bright went further to critique the seasonal nature of tourism promotion under the current government, emphasizing that Ghana’s rich cultural heritage and festivals deserve attention beyond just the December peak.
“We must be patrons of our tourism festivals absolutely from January to November and after. It’s not just December,” she asserted, calling for a more consistent effort to promote Ghana’s diverse cultural experiences throughout the year.
In making her case, Ebi Bright pointed to the untapped potential of Ghana’s vibrant festival culture, which spans the length of the calendar year.
Festivals such as Homowo, Aboakyir, and Chale Wote attract local and international visitors, yet Ebi believes more could be done to showcase them on the global stage.
“Tourism should be a year-round commitment, not just a December rush for headlines,” she noted.
