It’s All About Investments and Population- Fameye on Nigerian Music’s Global Success

In a recent interview with blogger Zionfelix, Ghanaian musician Fameye opened up about the disparities between the Nigerian and Ghanaian music industries, offering his unique perspective on why Nigerian artists seem to be flourishing on the global stage.

Fameye, known for his introspective lyrics, shared his candid thoughts, shedding light on the advantages that Nigeria holds over Ghana, while also adding a touch of humour to the conversation.

Reflecting on the rapid growth of Nigerian music internationally, Fameye attributed much of their success to strategic investments and their sheer population size. “It has to do with their type of investments and their population. Apart from that, I don’t see anything else,” he said.

Fameye’s comments emphasize the significant role that financial backing and numbers play in the success of an industry, especially when it comes to international recognition.

The Nigerian music industry is well-supported by major investors, from record labels to corporate sponsors, allowing artists to put out high-quality content and reach wider audiences through extensive marketing and global distribution networks.

The conversation, however, took a playful turn when Fameye jokingly mentioned the English-speaking skills of Nigerians, saying, “They cannot even speak English. Nigerians don’t know how to speak proper English,” a comment that has added a layer to entertainment news in Ghana.

While clearly said in jest, Fameye’s comment touched on a deeper truth—language and linguistic norms aren’t the determining factors in international success.

Nigerian artists have mastered the art of blending local languages and cultures with contemporary sounds, creating music that is deeply rooted in their heritage but still resonates globally.

Artists like Burna Boy, Wizkid, and Davido have proven that music transcends language barriers, as their songs, often infused with Pidgin or native Nigerian languages, top charts across the world.
