In an era where personal lives and choices are often on public display, Omowunmi Akinnifesi, a former beauty queen, has made a bold revelation that has sparked discussions across social media.
The 37-year-old businesswoman recently opened up about her personal journey of celibacy and the challenges she has faced in keeping herself pure despite the pressures of being in the public eye.
“I had a covenant with God when I was 18 about keeping myself,” Omowunmi shared in a heartfelt post. “People will say celibate, but I’ve never done it before.”
For her, this was not just about choosing a lifestyle; it was a promise to herself and her faith—a commitment that came with its own emotional weight.

However, as she navigated her adult years, the journey proved to be difficult, especially without guidance. “It wasn’t easy because I had no one to guide me, and I felt ashamed to discuss it,” she revealed.
In her circle, discussions about such personal choices were often met with mockery and laughter. “Because I had kept myself, I walked in shame for a very, very long time. I was actually very ashamed of it, and I had friends that I couldn’t talk to,” she confessed.
Omowunmi’s struggle was further complicated by the rumors and stories that circulated about her relationships. Being in the public eye meant that false narratives about her dating various people spread easily.
“When I finally spoke to them, they would laugh at me,” she explained. “And then, even worse, the stories that I’ll hear about myself—‘that I’ve dated this person or I was with that person’—those stories… would you believe that I actually didn’t mind those stories because it helped mask the real me?”
This admission sheds light on the pressures women face, particularly those in the public spotlight, and how the desire to fit in can sometimes make it easier to let falsehoods fly.
Omowunmi revealed that these rumours gave her a sense of relief, allowing her to conceal the truth about her virginity, which she thought would be viewed as an embarrassment.
“Imagine being okay with negative stories about you because you’re masking something you thought was going to be an embarrassment,” she said.
As she shared her personal struggle, Omowunmi also expressed concern for the younger generation. She acknowledged that her experience in today’s world, where “everyone is so open about their sexuality,” would be even harder.
“I can’t imagine what younger women choosing to toe the same line are going through,” she added, highlighting the challenges women face in a society where expectations and social pressures are often amplified by social media.
