It Was an Individualistic Vow- Sonnie Badu Weighs In on National Cathedral Delays

Ghanaian gospel artist Sonnie Badu has weighed in on the ongoing controversy surrounding President Nana Akufo-Addo’s National Cathedral project, which has faced criticism and delays since its inception.

Speaking during an interview on Empire FM in Takoradi, Badu attributed the confusion and challenges surrounding the project to the fact that it was rooted in a personal vow rather than a collective one.

“The reason why there are a lot of problems and confusion is that it was not a collective vow. It was an individualistic vow, and that is why there is a little bit of an issue there,” Badu stated.

He suggested that the individual nature of the president’s promise to build the cathedral is partly to blame for the challenges the project has faced, implying that a broader consensus might have been necessary for smoother progress.

President Nana Akufo-Addo initially pledged to construct the National Cathedral as a symbol of gratitude to God for granting him victory in the 2016 elections after two unsuccessful attempts.

During the sod-cutting ceremony for the cathedral in 2020, he shared that the interdenominational cathedral was intended to honour God and to serve as a unifying symbol for the Christian community in Ghana.

“I made a pledge to almighty God that He was gracious enough to grant my party, the NPP, and I victory in the 2016 elections after two unsuccessful attempts, so I will help build a cathedral to his glory and honour,” President Akufo-Addo remarked at the time.

Sonnie Badu, a renowned gospel singer and preacher, emphasized that the cathedral had the potential to foster national unity and social cohesion, particularly by uniting Ghana’s Christian denominations.

“The interdenominational national cathedral will help unify the Christian community and thereby help promote national unity and social cohesion,” he explained during the interview.
