It Hits Differently—Hammer Reacts After Richie Crowned Him Best Ghanaian Producer Of All Time

Hammer of the Last 2 fame has humbly accepted the declaration made by his fellow music producer, Richie Mensah, that he is the greatest Ghanaian music producer in history.

Richie Mensah, the CEO of Lynx Entertainment, expressed his opinion on Twitter, sparking a fresh discussion as far as entertainment in Ghana is concerned and eliciting a gracious reply from Hammer.

In a post on X, Richie wrote: “Can I just say this? The best Ghanaian producer of all time will always be Hammer.”

Immediately after he saw the post, Hammer emerged to respond: “it hits different when a great man honours you.”

The history of Ghana’s music would be incomplete without acknowledging the significant contributions of Hammer. Born Edward Nana Poku, Hammer played a pivotal role in the development of Hiplife, a dynamic music genre that originated in Ghana and combines elements of Hip-hop and Highlife.

Hammer’s influence extended beyond his own music. He actively sought out and nurtured talented individuals such as Tinny, Obrafuor, Kwaw Kese, Paa Dogo, KG and PM, Sarkodie, Edem, Agbeko, and many others.

His unique sound and style were easily recognizable, and they played a crucial role in launching the careers of numerous artists during the early stages of Hiplife.

Hammer

Hammer, in addition to his regular releases, also puts out compilation albums that provide an opportunity for the many artists associated with him to showcase their talent without having to release a full album.

Some of these compilation albums include Execution Diary (2003), a collaboration with Obrafour, Sounds of Our Time (2004), The Crusade of the Lost Files (2006), and the ongoing Evolution Recruits.

While Hammer’s methods of grooming his artists have faced scrutiny and controversy due to his perfectionist nature and passion for music, the undeniable success of the artists he has discovered seems to silence the critics. Furthermore, Hammer occasionally lends his musical talents to scoring movies, such as the American film Bloody Street.
