Shatta Wale has shared a unique perspective on the recent widespread internet outage affecting Ghana and neighbouring West African nations.
During an exclusive interview with Kafui Dey on GTV, Shatta Wale suggested that the disruption may have been intentional to combat cyberbullying.
He pointed out that many individuals misuse the internet, using it to harm others rather than utilizing its benefits. Shatta Wale highlighted how the internet has enabled easy access to online abuse, prompting world leaders to take action to regulate such behaviour, leading to the interruption in service.
“I feel them dey take we do science. They want to know how we will think without internet. The internet is too much into peoples head and people are abusing it so they tried to shut it down for people to sleep. The problems on the internet is getting too much these days.
People are mishandling the opportunities on the internet. Somebody like me I tell people me getting here was the internet, so I make positive use of the internet. I think our leaders want to shape us and help us discipline our mind because the abuse on the internet is too much,” he said.
Data services in several regions of Africa were severely impacted on Thursday, March 14, due to an undersea cable cut. This incident has caused major disruptions, particularly affecting Mobile Network Operators operating on limited data capacity.
Ghana’s Communications Authority reported a loss of approximately 1,596.6 Gbps of data capacity as a result of multiple undersea cable cuts. The disruption has had a significant impact on various sectors such as banking, healthcare, education, and government services, highlighting the crucial role of internet access in daily activities.
Authorities in the affected countries are working tirelessly to minimize interruptions and restore internet services. Despite various speculations, including technical issues and cyberattacks on internet infrastructure, the exact cause of the outage remains unknown.
The National Communications Authority (NCA) of Ghana has stated that it will take at least five weeks to fully restore internet services.
