US comedian of Ghanaian descent, Michael Blackson, has sparked a social media frenzy with revelations about a raw deal he received from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government.
In a series of fiery posts shared on X (formerly Twitter), Blackson expressed his frustration over significant financial losses tied to his investment in Ghanaian Eurobonds, which he had intended to help fund his charitable efforts back home.
Blackson, who built a free school in Agona Nsaba, explained that he chose to invest in Eurobonds to ensure the school’s sustainability.
However, the investment quickly turned sour. “When I was wiring the money from the States, my financial advisor advised me not to, but I had confidence in my motherland—and they proved me wrong,” Blackson lamented.
The comedian didn’t mince words, threatening legal action: “I’m taking Ghana to the world court. They won’t get away with this. Bonds only go bad if there’s some type of civil war. You don’t take your customers’ money and pay your debt with it.”
Blackson’s frustration is rooted in the belief that the Ghanaian government misused the funds intended for bondholders like himself.
“I did the Eurobonds because I figured that would help pay for the life span of the free school I built. Ghana decided to use our money to pay their debt to China or whoever, and leave us hanging.”
With his characteristic humour tinged with genuine disappointment, Blackson called out Ghana’s Minister of Finance: “Who’s the Minister of Finance in Ghana? I have beef with this guy.”
He explained that investors from the diaspora who put their money into the continent are now faced with two unsatisfactory options: “Either take a 37% cut and receive 5% interest with an 11-year maturity date or no cut but just 1.9% interest with a 15-year maturity date. I’m very disappointed in my people for this.”
Blackson’s posts have ignited discussions on social media, highlighting the frustrations felt by members of the diaspora who choose to invest in their home countries, only to feel let down by the system.
