Grammy Award-winning artist Rihanna has returned to her homeland of Barbados, not to perform but to expand her beauty brand, Fenty Beauty.
She used the launch event for her latest Fenty products to reflect on her journey from global pop icon to powerhouse entrepreneur. In a moving address to the crowd, Rihanna opened up about how her music career was just the beginning.
“Music was what got the attention, but God had other plans for me,” she said, speaking with a mix of gratitude and nostalgia. “I was able to create in ways that were sincere, genuine, organic, and true to the things I love.”
For fans, Rihanna’s success in the beauty world is no surprise. With the launch of Fenty Beauty in 2017, she immediately shook up the industry with her groundbreaking approach to inclusivity, introducing 40 foundation shades that set a new standard in beauty.
In past interviews, she has said, “I wanted everyone to be able to find themselves in this brand,” emphasizing the importance of diversity and representation. Since then, Fenty Beauty has become not just a beauty line but a cultural statement, celebrating individuality and inclusivity.
The business quickly evolved into a billion-dollar empire. In 2021, Forbes officially declared Rihanna a billionaire, estimating that her net worth was largely tied to the success of Fenty Beauty.
This remarkable feat made her one of the world’s wealthiest musicians, though her path to financial success had veered far from the music scene. “I’ve found a way to connect with people that goes beyond music,” she explained at the event. “It’s fulfilling in a whole different way.”
Yet, fans are still holding out hope for new music. It has been almost a decade since the release of her last full-length album, ANTI, which dropped in 2016.
With songs like “Work” and “Needed Me,” ANTI was a defining album that showcased her versatility as an artist, cementing her place in the pantheon of pop and R&B.
But since then, Rihanna has largely stepped away from the recording studio, focusing instead on expanding her business ventures with Fenty Beauty, Savage x Fenty lingerie, and Fenty Skin.
At this stage, Rihanna is one of the few artists who has successfully transcended the boundaries of her initial fame, moving beyond just one industry. Her journey from pop sensation to entrepreneur has inspired millions, particularly young women of colour.
