Delta State Governor’s aide, Ossai Ovie Success, has expressed sharp disapproval of Nigerian pastor Tobi Adegboyega’s birthday celebration, which featured Afrobeats superstar Davido as a guest performer.
In a public critique, Ovie argued that Pastor Tobi’s choice to invite a secular artist to the event was an affront to Christian values and an “embarrassment to the Gospel.”
“I’m disappointed in Pastor Tobi for inviting Davido to his birthday party,” Ovie began, reflecting on his reaction to the flashy celebration held in London.
He didn’t mince words in his rebuke, stating that the pastor’s event was inconsistent with the spiritual role a church leader should uphold. “This is an embarrassment to the Gospel. He should ask God for forgiveness,” he added with evident frustration.
The event, meant to mark a joyful occasion, took an unexpected turn in public opinion as many questioned the appropriateness of Davido’s performance.
As the founder of Salvation Proclaimers Anointed Church, Pastor Tobi is seen as a spiritual figure who, in the eyes of some observers, should champion gospel music and worship over secular entertainment.
Ovie’s critique underscores this viewpoint: “As a pastor, he should have invited Gospel musicians to come and minister to his guests and save souls to the kingdom of God,” he emphasized, making it clear that he expected a more conventional celebration in line with Christian teachings.
The incident sparked a broader conversation online, with many echoing Ovie’s discontent, while others defended Pastor Tobi’s right to celebrate his birthday as he saw fit. However, for Ovie, the event lacked any sense of spiritual reverence.
“I didn’t feel the Holy Spirit’s presence, as the party was inconsistent with pastoral values,” he asserted. The atmosphere, he felt, deviated from what many congregants and followers expect in Christian celebrations, particularly those led by clergy.
Ovie’s words resonated with many who believe that Christian leaders hold a unique responsibility to set examples aligned with the “fruit of the Spirit.”
He challenged Pastor Tobi’s role as a pastor, questioning why such events often stir controversy rather than inspire faith.
“Why does Pastor Tobi consistently bring embarrassment to the Gospel? He should reconsider identifying as a pastor, as his actions lack the fruit of the Spirit,” Ovie said, hinting at a pattern of behaviour he views as troubling.
For many critics, the expectation is clear: pastors, especially influential ones like Adegboyega, should create an environment that reflects Christian virtues.
This sentiment led Ovie to conclude his rebuke with a sombre call to reflection and repentance. “Pastor Tobi should ask God for forgiveness, for he has sinned against God,” he stated, urging Adegboyega to reassess his actions.
