Ghanaian rapper Edem is trending after delivering a sharp response to a fan who sought financial help during a live session on social media.
The fan, struggling to pay rent, requested GHS 2,000 from the award-winning musician to top up their rent payment.
Edem was hosting an interactive session with fans when the plea for financial aid came through.
Rather than brushing off the request or making empty promises, the rapper offered a direct and unconventional piece of advice: relocate to the village if urban living expenses proved too burdensome.
“If you can’t afford rent in Accra, maybe it’s time to consider moving to your hometown. Life in the city is tough,” Edem told the fan during the livestream.
He explained that, like many others, he was also navigating financial pressures and could not meet such requests when his own challenges were unresolved. “I’m not in the best position to help right now. Everyone is going through something,” he added.
The rapper’s response quickly went viral, sparking mixed reactions on social media. While some applauded his honesty and practical advice, others criticized his tone, viewing it as dismissive.
A Twitter user commented, “Edem didn’t sugarcoat it, and honestly, he’s right. Accra is expensive. If you can’t make ends meet, the village might be a better option.” Another argued, “Even if he couldn’t help, he could have shown more empathy. Not everyone can just up and relocate.”
