If It’s About Art, I Should Have Six Grammys by Now-Taj Weekes

In a recent interview with Blakk Rasta on 3FM’s Urban Blend show, reggae artist Taj Weekes expressed his strong opinion that legendary musician Bob Marley does not need a Grammy Award to validate his greatness.

Speaking via Zoom from his base in New York on October 17, Weekes highlighted that Marley’s influence and global impact surpass any accolades.

“Bob Marley is the greatest, and he does not need a Grammy to prove anything. I think he has everything; the whole world knows him already, and giving him another feather in his cap is never going to change anything,” Weekes said.

Reflecting on the politics often associated with award shows, Weekes criticized the Grammy Awards system, noting that if it were based purely on art rather than nepotism, he would have won multiple awards already.

His comment underscored the subjective nature of recognition in the music industry: “If it is truly about arts and not about nepotism and politics, I would have won six Grammys already. I am here to make art; I know I make good art, and it is not everybody who is going to get it, but that doesn’t lessen the value of the art.”

As an artist whose work has been submitted for consideration for Best Reggae Album at the upcoming 67th Grammy Awards, Weekes also touched on the global influence of African music.

He used a metaphor to explain how Marley’s legacy continues to spread: “A seed was planted and the tree grew, and branches of that tree grew over other fences, and its fruit dropped in those yards and grew into other trees.

“So even if I am three to six trees down the line, I am still from the original root because in the end all these boil down to African music, and we are all African people.”

Weekes’ remarks honour Bob Marley’s enduring influence while addressing his own frustrations with the formal recognition process within the industry.
