“Does this girl think politics is the Cantata she acts?” These were the words directed at Ebi Bright, a Ghanaian actress and career diplomat, as she pursued her political ambitions.

It was a stark moment that highlighted the prejudices she would face in her journey to becoming the newly elected Member of Parliament for Tema Central.

Ebi Bright’s entrance into politics has been nothing short of groundbreaking.

For her prominent role in Cantata, a popular Ghanaian TV drama, she found herself dismissed and marginalized by some who believed that acting had no place in the serious world of politics. In an interview with Graphic Showbiz, Ebi opens up about the hurdles she faced:

“I was told point blank that politics is not for ‘cantata’ people like me. I remember one man saying, ‘Does this girl think politics is the Cantata she acts?’”

Despite these dismissive comments, Ebi remained resolute. Her vision was clear, and she knew her win would not only prove the skeptics wrong but also serve as inspiration for other creatives.

“This is how people are marginalized,” she reflects. “But I know my win will encourage many creatives to believe in their own political dreams.”

Ebi’s journey into politics wasn’t easy. As a career diplomat with a wealth of experience, she had hoped her diplomatic skills would be valued in her political campaigns.

However, many still viewed her through the lens of her acting career, unable to see beyond her TV persona. “I was outrightly dismissed for my political ambitions on several occasions when I went out to campaign,” she admits.

Despite the setbacks, Ebi is undeterred. “I intend to move beyond partisanship and have a good strategy that serves the interest of the people of Tema Central,” she confidently states.

Her approach emphasizes unity and progress, and she is determined to make her mark as a lawmaker, pushing for the development of her constituency with a focus on long-term solutions.
