Former President John Dramani Mahama has shared details of a surprise phone call from Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, conceding defeat in Ghana’s 2025 presidential elections.
Speaking during a fellowship with the clergy in Kumasi on Sunday, March 2, 2025, Mahama recounted how the moment unfolded. “I was sleeping when I was informed that my brother wanted to speak to me.
“I asked which of my brothers, and they said, ‘Your brother, the Vice President, Dr Bawumia.’ I called him back, and he said, ‘My big brother, I called to let you know, we fought a good fight.
“When I look at how things are going, I am certain you are the newly elected president. So I called to congratulate you, and also, after this call, I will address the media and concede defeat,’” he revealed.

Mahama admitted that the call caught him off guard, as he had anticipated a longer electoral process.
“By 9 a.m. the day after the elections, all ballots had been counted. I initially expected the Electoral Commission to take at least three days to collate the final results,” he noted.
The event in Kumasi was organized as a Thanksgiving service, where Mahama expressed appreciation to religious leaders for their role in ensuring peace during the electoral process.
He acknowledged their guidance and support throughout the campaign period, emphasizing the importance of unity and national cohesion post-election.
