Nigerian Afrobeats sensation CKay has taken to social media to reflect on his pioneering influence in the genre, boldly claiming that he helped pave the way for many of the trends thriving in Afrobeats today.
In a post shared on his X (formerly Twitter) platform, CKay expressed pride in his contributions, particularly with the rise of “Emo Afrobeats,” a subgenre that blends emotional, introspective lyrics with Afrobeats rhythms.
“CKay IS the first,” the artist began, emphasizing his trailblazing role. “I pioneered many vibes Afrobeat artists thrive off today… iykyk.”
He went on to highlight how his early experiments with Emo Afrobeats were initially met with skepticism.
“Y’all laughed when I came up with Emo Afrobeats and was on TikTok all day, but now many are doing the same thing, calling it ridiculous names—and making $$,” he said, hinting at how the sound he introduced is now widely embraced, even by some who once mocked it.
