Nigerian singer Rema has reflected on his difficult past in an interview.
Shedding light on his past struggles, Rema mentioned a time when he worked as a bar attendant at a beach in Ghana.
Although he didn’t specify the exact location, many Ghanaians believe it could be the vibrant Labadi Beach in Accra.
The Calm Down singer shared that he had to take on all responsibilities after losing his father and brother.
Rema revealed that there was a period when his mother was so financially strained that she couldn’t even afford public transportation and had to walk long distances.
These revelations were made during a conversation with Manny Norte on Capital Xtra.
Rema said following the tragic loss of his father and brother, he had to juggle multiple odd jobs to survive and make a living.

“At some points, things got tough I had to man up. My past life has the same effect on my present being in the music and taking things forward,” he narrated.
“I had to work hard because I lost my father and my brother and things were left only to me. So, I had to put things in place. I did a lots of job like working at a beach in Ghana.
“Hard work got me my this shape. At first, it was really hard for me, I cried and was really sad. When I got back to Nigeria I had to appreciate my mum for being strong so I had to get her a car.
He appreciated his mother for the big role she played not only in his life but also in his career. He added that the appreciation was part of why he had to buy her a car when he was only 17.
“I was tired of seeing her trekking everyday. She didn’t even have money to use a public transport or motorcycle. Even though I had no car of my own then, I had to buy my mum a car.”
Speaking on his musical career, Rema disclosed that he spent most of his time in the studio after returning to Nigeria.
He added that it was during this time that he met a producer called Ozedikus in August 2018, produced ‘Dumebi,’ which later turned out to be a hit song.
