Former Minister for Gender, Children, and Social Protection, Sarah Adwoa Safo, has broken her silence on the painful experience of losing her child and the difficult choices she had to make during that period.
Speaking on Joy Prime, she revealed that personal tragedy, including the loss of her baby and her son’s critical illness, shaped her absence from political duties, a decision she does not regret.
“I was heavily pregnant during the 2020 elections. I lost my baby. I didn’t get what I was expecting out of my pregnancy,” she shared, highlighting the emotional toll of the experience.
Her challenges did not end there. While grieving, her eldest son fell seriously ill in the United States, forcing her to make a difficult choice between her role as a mother and her responsibilities as a government official.
“My son was on the verge of death. I had the choice to stay as a mother and take care of my son or take up my position as a Member of Parliament and a Minister. Any mother watching me today should put herself in my shoes. What choice would you have made?” she asked.
Despite informing the necessary authorities, Adwoa Safo lamented that her absence had been misrepresented, leading to public criticism.
“I communicated with all those that mattered, including the Chief of Staff and the President. They knew the challenges we were going through,” she explained.
She expressed disappointment at the lack of empathy from the public and political circles, particularly from those who she expected to understand her pain.
“I expected mothers to feel my pain. I expected fathers to feel my pain,” she stated.
Firm in her decision, Adwoa Safo concluded that no amount of political pressure could have made her abandon her son in his time of need.
“If you’re not a witch, you’re going to choose your child. And that I did. And I don’t regret it,” she affirmed.
