Former Majority Leader and Suame MP, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, has revealed the behind-the-scenes political manoeuvres that led to his exit from his leadership position in Parliament.
In an interview on Asempa FM, he disclosed that about 80 MPs had privately informed him that President Akufo-Addo was pushing for his removal.
“Some of my colleagues, about 80 MPs, informed me ahead of time that the president wanted me out. Many MPs encouraged me to fight back, assuring me of their support,” he revealed.
Despite the backing from his colleagues, he made the difficult decision to step down, prioritizing party unity over personal ambition.
“I didn’t want to be the eye of any storm in the party. I felt I had had enough, so I decided to resign, and I said it there and then,” he stated.

According to Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, President Akufo-Addo justified his removal by citing the rising influence of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Central Region, particularly with Prof.
Naana Opoku-Agyemang likely to be Mahama’s running mate and Cassiel Ato Forson’s role as Minority Leader.
“The president argued that the NDC was gaining ground in the Central Region, especially with Naana Opoku-Agyemang likely to be Mahama’s running mate and Ato Forson taking up the Minority Leader position,” he disclosed.
While some MPs disagreed with this logic, he foresaw the direction things were heading and chose to step aside rather than escalate tensions.
“Most MPs disagreed with this reasoning, but I saw where things were headed. Rather than make things more complicated, I stepped aside,” he concluded.
