For over two decades, Basketmouth has dominated the comedy scene, making millions laugh with his unique wit and relatable humour.
But now, the celebrated Nigerian comedian is setting his sights on an entirely different stage: the movie industry.
In a recent interview with Saturday Beats, Basketmouth revealed that his transition to filmmaking wasn’t a spur-of-the-moment decision but a deliberate step in a long-term vision he had been nurturing for years.
“In actual fact, it’s been a plan all along,” he said confidently. “I knew I was going to end up in the movies. So when I started comedy, I went to TV, and all along, I knew I was going to end up in movies. I enjoy making movies.”
For Basketmouth, the shift wasn’t daunting, largely because his comedy background had already trained him to be a storyteller. Crafting narratives and connecting with audiences through laughter gave him the confidence to explore other artistic expressions.

“Transitioning was easy because it was already in the plan. I can make it because, by default, I’m already a storyteller based on the fact that I do comedy,” he explained.
His passion for creating doesn’t stop at just telling stories; it’s about telling them with intention. Basketmouth’s latest movie project, which he describes as a labor of love, reflects his desire to prioritize art over profit.
“I didn’t do this movie to make money but to create art and excellence,” he said candidly. “But if it does, by the grace of God, I’ll make the money back. And if it doesn’t, I’ll challenge myself with this project. I’d rather challenge myself to create something exceptional.”
This audacious mindset has defined Basketmouth’s career from the very beginning.
Many fans may not know that his rise to fame started in Lagos’ bustling comedy clubs, where he honed his craft performing for small but passionate crowds.
His early struggles didn’t just shape his humour but also cemented his reputation as a fearless creative willing to take risks.
Now, as he ventures into the movie industry, the stakes are even higher. But if there’s one thing Basketmouth thrives on, it’s the thrill of a challenge.
“Next year, I’m going on tour,” he announced with a glint of excitement in his voice. “I have my UK and US tours, and I’m going to have my show here in Nigeria.”
