In a recent interview with British media personality Madame Joyce, Nigerian singer Shallipopi revealed that his stage name was inspired by an old Chinese movie.
Shallipopi explained that he came up with the idea for his name after watching the 1994 Chinese kung fu comedy film, Shaolin Popey.
Before settling on Shallipopi, he had considered using his birth name, Crown, as well as nicknames like ‘Drip Face’. Shallipopi shared a childhood memory of stumbling upon the movie by accident when his mother bought a Tom and Jerry CD, which turned out to be Shaolin Popey when they played it on their DVD player.
The ‘Elon Musk’ crooner said in part; “I was looking for [stage] name, so I was like let me coin something from the movie Shaolin Popey, that’s how I came up with my nickname”.
Shallipopi’s real name is Crown Uzama. He is a Nigerian rapper, singer, and songwriter. He rose to mainstream fame in 2023 following the release of his single “Elon Musk”, which peaked at number one on the Nigeria Top 100 Apple Music.
He followed up with his debut studio album Presido La Pluto (2023), which peaked at number one on the TurnTable Top 50 Albums and also peaked at number five on the Apple Music top 100 albums.
Shallipopi commenced his professional journey by creating freestyles and sharing them on various social media platforms, including TikTok. However, his career took a significant turn when he achieved a breakthrough with the launch of his hit single titled “Elon Musk”.
In an exciting development, Apple Music declared Shallipopi as the newest highlighted artist in their renowned Up Next artist development program in Nigeria on 20 June 2023. Building on this momentum, he unveiled the remix version of “Elon Musk” on 30 June, featuring the talented artists Fireboy DML and Zlatan.
