I Feel Vindicated After IMF Bailout – Adwoa Safo on E-Levy

Sarah Adwoa Safo has reiterated her opposition to the e-levy, stating that its failure justifies her stance.

Speaking on JoyNews’ The Pulse, she argued that the tax not only burdened ordinary Ghanaians but also failed to achieve its intended purpose.

“We were told that by introducing the e-levy, Ghana could avoid going to the International Monetary Fund (IMF). However, in the end, we still ended up seeking IMF support,” she stated.

The former Gener Minister, who previously refused to back the levy in Parliament, said she had no regrets about her decision.

“If the e-levy was truly a good tax, why did we still end up at the IMF? How can we justify taxing those who are already struggling, especially when it didn’t even prevent us from seeking IMF support?”

She believes the policy played a role in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) defeat, as many Ghanaians felt betrayed by the government’s promises.

“It just didn’t make sense. The e-levy hurt ordinary Ghanaians, and in the end, it didn’t achieve what it promised.”
