Ghanaian rapper Samuel Adu Frimpong, known by his stage name Medikal, recently opened up about the personal and professional struggles he faced due to a criminal record, as well as his thoughts on the country’s political climate.
Speaking on Hitz FM, Medikal shared the emotional impact of his legal battles, particularly the repercussions it had on his ability to travel.
“I felt inhuman, it wasn’t right,” he reflected on the time when his criminal record caused him significant issues.
The rapper went on to explain that he was unaware of the severity of the situation. “I didn’t know; I was clueless about the fact that it was an offence in this country,” he admitted. Medikal’s honesty revealed a side of the story not often shared by public figures.
The incident in question stems from an earlier brush with the law when he was accused of brandishing a weapon.
However, Medikal clarified, “Brandishing isn’t when you’re at home, taking a picture of something the police registered and licensed for you themselves.”
He explained that the gun in question was legally registered, which complicated the perception of his actions. Yet, despite this, Medikal’s criminal record had wider consequences.
He revealed that he had to clear his name with embassies before he could travel. The realization that something he thought was legal could lead to international travel restrictions hit him hard, leaving him to deal with the fallout on a personal and professional level.
Medikal also used the interview to touch on his political views, particularly in light of his previous criticisms of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).
He referenced a tweet he made about the alleged unfair imprisonment he faced, stating firmly, “I didn’t commit any crime.”
This was Medikal’s way of clearing the air, offering his perspective on the controversy and asserting his innocence in the matter.
When it comes to the incoming National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration, Medikal didn’t mince words.
“I don’t trust the next party coming into power,” he said, signaling his scepticism about the new government. However, he did express a glimmer of hope for better governance. “I just hope they will treat citizens fairly and won’t abuse their power,” he added.
