I Didn’t Know How to Set Boundaries – Daniel Etim-Effiong

In a candid reflection on the early struggles of his marriage, actor Daniel Etim-Effiong has opened up about how his journey to understanding boundaries and assertiveness tested his relationship with his wife, Toyosi.

Speaking about the challenges he faced, Etim-Effiong shared how difficult it was for him to adjust to his wife’s assertiveness, revealing that it was a source of emotional turmoil during the early years of their marriage.

“I’m not used to people having a say… Being with a wife that was so assertive was chaotic for me,” Etim-Effiong admitted, his voice tinged with vulnerability.

“I felt I was losing my grip on the marriage. I felt I wasn’t being a man or a husband, and it messed with my mind.”

For Etim-Effiong, who had grown accustomed to being in control, the dynamics of the relationship felt overwhelming.

The assertiveness of his wife was a stark contrast to his expectations of marriage and led to deep self-doubt about his role as a husband.

Yet, as with many relationships, time and personal growth brought clarity. The actor explained that his struggles were not just with the assertiveness of his wife but also with the complications that arose from the pressures of being surrounded by other women.

“Of course, there were issues with women all around me and I didn’t know how to set boundaries at the time as well so I was just like all over the place,” Etim-Effiong confessed. “I didn’t know how to set limits or what was acceptable in the context of marriage. I was learning things the hard way.”

However, with time and reflection, Etim-Effiong came to understand the importance of boundaries within a marriage—both with external relationships and with his own behavior.

“It was later I started to learn about boundaries that I actually need to draw the line and say it’s not okay that you can call me at funky hours of the night. She might be your friend, but it’s not okay, you’re married now,” he said. “Things like that, for example.”
