Comedian Derrick Kobina Bonney, professionally known as DKB, has responded to critics questioning his intellectual abilities by highlighting his academic background and the expertise he possesses.
His remarks follow a wave of online criticism regarding his capability to analyze the manifestoes of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in light of the upcoming presidential elections.
DKB’s comments were prompted by his recent appearance alongside former President John Dramani Mahama, who engaged with Ghanaian youth to share his vision during an event at the Bukum Arena on International Youth Day.
In a video response, DKB addressed the condescending nature of such assumptions about comedians.
He expressed disappointment that some individuals believe comedians lack the knowledge and intellect necessary to engage with political discourse.
“This is a warning to the lame people who, when I’m discussing NDC/NPP policies, question my knowledge in economics and governance because I’m a comedian! Stop the fullish, condescending nonsense.”
“Most of you guys don’t know me. Those of you who just got to know me through comedy, I think you are very lame if you think a comedian is just all about comedy and knows nothing with no educational background.
“When I was doing a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture at the University of Ghana, where were you? I also did it in secondary school. Can most of you qualify to read that course at the University of Ghana?”
He then added, “When I come out and I am commenting on trending issues, like the NPP manifesto launch and the NDC’s policies, then you hear people come to say, What does a comedian know about the economy?”
