I Came on a Friendly Visit – Mahama Strengthens Ghana-Mali Ties in Bamako

President John Dramani Mahama has reiterated the deep-rooted historical ties between Ghana and Mali, emphasizing the long-standing relationship dating back to the era of former leaders Modibo Keita and Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

During a working visit to Bamako, Mali, on Saturday, Mahama engaged in a closed-door meeting with Malian Transition President General Assimi Goita, where they discussed enhancing bilateral cooperation, regional security, and economic growth.

Speaking to the press after the meeting, President Mahama stated, “Everybody knows the historic relations that have existed between Ghana and Mali since the period of our ex-presidents, Keita and Dr. Kwame Nkrumah… and so I came on a friendly visit, and also to thank President Goita for allowing Prime Minister Maiga to visit Ghana when I was being inaugurated as president.”

The visit aligns with President Mahama’s ongoing diplomatic efforts to reinforce Ghana’s policy of good neighbourliness and collaboration with West African states.

Upon his arrival in Bamako, General Assimi Goita warmly received him before proceeding to the Presidential Palace for discussions. His trip to Mali is the first leg of a regional tour that will see him visit Niger and Burkina Faso.

Beyond bilateral relations, Mahama also addressed the growing tensions between the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the Sahel states—Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger—following their decision to exit the regional bloc.

He underscored the need for continued dialogue and reconciliation, despite the political challenges.

“The friendship and brotherly love between the people should continue,” Mahama asserted, calling for constructive engagement between the Sahel states and ECOWAS to maintain stability and unity in the region.

Mahama’s diplomatic engagements highlight Ghana’s commitment to fostering peace, economic collaboration, and regional integration, even in the face of geopolitical shifts.

His next stops in Niger and Burkina Faso are expected to further solidify Ghana’s ties with these nations.
