Carlos Ahenkorah has broken his silence regarding the infamous disruption of the electoral process to elect a new speaker of parliament in the 8th parliament in 2021.
In a reflective interview on UTV, Ahenkorah spoke about the personal and political ramifications of his actions during the high-stakes election process between NDC’s Alban Bagbin and the NPP’s Prof. Mike Oquaye.
The event, which ignited a media storm and drew intense public scrutiny, was more than just a political moment for Ahenkorah.
“It wasn’t just a political clash, it became a family affair,” he shared. “My children and family members had to bear the weight of the social media storm that followed.
It was a difficult time for all of us.” Despite the backlash, Ahenkorah expressed unwavering conviction in his decision, attributing it to his deep loyalty to the NPP.
“I stand by my actions because I believed it was necessary for the party’s success,” Ahenkorah asserted.
“It was never about personal glory; it was about doing what I felt was right for the NPP.” However, he acknowledged that while he acted out of commitment to the party, the President, Nana Akufo-Addo, did not publicly endorse his behaviour.
“The President didn’t praise me for it, but I wasn’t looking for that,” he clarified.
