Hollywood star Idris Elba has shared his plans to move to Africa in the coming years, driven by a deep connection to the continent and a desire to help elevate its film industry.

Known for his roles in iconic shows like The Wire and Luther, the 52-year-old actor has expressed a strong commitment to supporting Africa’s growing movie sector by building film studios and contributing to the local creative economy.

Elba’s African roots run deep, with his mother hailing from Ghana and his father from Sierra Leone.

This personal connection has fueled his passion to give back to the continent, particularly through film.

During a meeting with industry professionals in Accra, Ghana, Elba spoke about his future plans, stating, “I will be moving here—this is not just a dream, it’s happening.”

Over the next five to ten years, Elba envisions splitting his time between cities like Accra, Freetown, and Zanzibar, where he is already involved in efforts to develop world-class film studios.

He believes that these cities are poised to become major centers for African storytelling, helping to shape how the world views the continent through the lens of its own people.

“Africans need to be at the heart of the filmmaking process,” Elba emphasized, underscoring the importance of local talent in both production and distribution.

In an interview with the BBC, Elba also shared his deep cultural ties to Ghana, proudly identifying with the Ga tribe. “I am a Ga boy,” he said with a smile.

“I love the sun, the heat, and the food—these are all a part of me.” His strong sense of belonging to Africa further fuels his desire to contribute to its cultural and creative landscape.

Elba’s vision to invest in African cinema is part of a broader movement among global creatives seeking to shift the narrative surrounding the continent.

As Africa’s film industry continues to grow, with Nollywood and other regional industries thriving, there is a renewed focus on creating infrastructure that will allow African stories to reach wider audiences.

Elba’s initiative to build studios in Accra and Zanzibar is aimed at bolstering this effort, creating spaces where African filmmakers can produce high-quality content without having to rely on foreign resources.

Africa’s film industry has historically been underrepresented on the global stage, often overshadowed by Hollywood and other Western markets.

Elba’s efforts are part of a wave of change, pushing for African stories to be told by Africans for the world.
