Ghanaian musician Kurl Songx has disclosed that his song “Jeniffer Lomoty,” featuring Sarkodie, moved beyond the controversy that arose in the public sphere due to protests from the Ga Adangbe community regarding the allegedly offensive lyrics.

The artist, who was previously mentored by the acclaimed producer Kaywa, mentioned that both he and Sarkodie were called upon by the Krobo chiefs to clarify a segment of the song that was perceived as derogatory towards Krobo women.

He provided this new perspective on the track that sparked significant unrest upon its release a few years back.

The song perpetuated a narrative regarding the promiscuity of Krobo women, attributed to a curse from the renowned Okomfo Anokye of the Ashanti Kingdom, which led to its unpopularity among the Krobo people and resulted in a public backlash against both the artist and Sarkodie.

In an effort to resolve the situation, Kurl Songx, alongside Sarkodie’s late attorney and his manager, convened with the Krobo elders to find a peaceful resolution.

Kurl Songx clarified that the lyrics were not intended to be offensive but were rather a form of artistic expression.

I got to understand that it’s part of the work. We met them and solved it amicably. Together with Sarkodie’s late lawyer, my manager and I talked about it. We met I think in East Legon and we explained to them that this is not personal, it’s art,” he narrated during an interview on Onua TV.

“Thanks to them, somebody else would not have understood because it was very sensitive. Sarkodie’s words were art, not to just tarnish someone’s image,” he added.

The repercussions still trailed Sarkodie after a group called New Ghana Social Justice Forum petitioned the French National Olympic and Sports Committee to prevent Sarkodie from performing at the Africa Fan Zone.

According to the group, Sarkodie’s alleged derogatory remarks about women, which they view as indicative of misogyny.

Citing instances such as his disrespectful references to Yvonne Nelson in the song ‘Try Me’ and Krobo women in the track ‘Jennifer Lomotey’ with Kurl Songx, the group argues that Sarkodie’s history of disrespect towards women disqualifies him from participating in the Africa Fan Zone event scheduled for August 9, 2024, at the Stade Robert Cesar in France.

“Honouring Sarkodie with the stage at Africa Fan Zone raises concerns, particularly for women. Sarkodie’s past actions, such as labelling actress Yvonne Nelson a prostitute who belongs to the streets in response to her memoir ‘I Am Not Yvonne Nelson,’ are troubling,” 3News quoted the group as saying.

Eventually, Sarkodie’s performance at Station Afrique in Paris was cancelled due to what has been termed a contractual issue, as indicated in a press release regarding the situation.
