Former Minister of State at the National Security Ministry, Dr. Brian Acheampong, has criticized the 2025 budget allocation for the country’s security agencies, describing it as insufficient to effectively safeguard the nation.
Speaking during a parliamentary debate on budget estimates, he highlighted the constraints facing the sector due to limited funding.
“The 2.9 billion cedis allocated to the entire national security architecture includes 2.4 billion cedis for compensation, leaving only 500 million cedis for operations. This is the same national security we rely on to protect our borders, assist the Defence Ministry, manage internal security threats, and handle operations like galamsey and conflicts in Bawku,” he stated.
Dr. Acheampong further emphasized that the National Investigations Bureau (NIB), which operates across all 16 regions, has been given an allocation that, in his view, is insufficient to sustain its operations in Greater Accra alone for even a month.
His remarks have sparked discussions on whether the current budgetary provisions are enough to maintain national security, given the country’s ongoing internal and external security challenges.
