He Was Too Young, So We Replaced Him – John Boadu on Afenyo-Markin’s 2004 Disappointment

In the world of politics, rejection can either break a person or strengthen their resolve. For Alexander Afenyo-Markin, his political journey is a testament to resilience, patience, and determination.

In a recent interview on Otec FM, former NPP General Secretary John Boadu revealed an untold story about Afenyo-Markin’s early political struggles.

According to Boadu, in 2004, Afenyo-Markin had secured victory as the parliamentary candidate for Effutu. However, the party leadership made a tough call—one that would test the young politician’s willpower.

“In 2004, Afenyo-Markin won as a parliamentary candidate for Effutu. However, when we were about to file, we said he was too young, so we couldn’t allow him to contest because we had someone else whom we could make a minister if he wins,” Boadu disclosed.

It was a heartbreaking moment for Afenyo-Markin, who had worked tirelessly to earn his spot. Despite winning fairly, he was asked to step aside for another candidate.

“So, we called Afenyo-Markin and told him that although he had won the parliamentary candidature on our ticket, we would not allow him to contest because we had someone else in mind,” Boadu continued.

For a young politician with dreams of representing his people, this was a bitter pill to swallow. The disappointment was overwhelming.

“He cried several times, but we went ahead with our preferred candidate,” Boadu revealed.

But rather than give up, Afenyo-Markin chose to keep pushing. Instead of fading into political obscurity, he redirected his energy, contesting as an assemblyman. Step by step, he worked his way up the political ladder, eventually becoming a presiding member of the district.

His persistence paid off in 2008 when he finally had his chance to contest for the parliamentary seat. This time, nothing stood in his way, and he emerged victorious.

Reflecting on his journey, Boadu remarked, “When his time came in 2008, he contested again. And now, is he not the leader?”
