In a stunning turn of events, Ghanaian rapper Guru has transitioned from the stage to student leadership, becoming the 67th President of the Student Representative Council (SRC) at the University of Ghana.
His victory was confirmed on Wednesday, September 19, 2024, after a highly anticipated election that drew significant attention both on campus and beyond.
Guru, whose real name is Maradona Yeboah Adjei, secured an impressive 9,455 votes out of the 18,659 valid votes cast.
This means the popular rapper-turned-student leader received 50.7% of the total votes, solidifying his win in a competitive race.
His closest rival, Emmanuel Owusu Amponsah, and his running mate Lawrence Edinam Egleh, managed to gather 6,645 votes, representing 35.6% of the total.
The results showed the confidence and support the student body had in Guru’s vision for their university.
For many, the election results were more than just numbers—they represented a shift in student leadership dynamics.
Guru’s background in music, particularly in the hip-hop and hiplife genres, made him an unconventional candidate.
A series of events preceded the elections as Guru and his running mate, Jeffery Adu Yeboah, were disqualified after admitting during the vetting process that they do not reside in any of the university’s halls.
Guru contested the legality of this disqualification, questioning the fairness of excluding non-resident students from SRC elections, especially since the SRC’s decisions impact the entire student body.
After a review of the case, the board decided to reinstate both candidates, allowing them to compete for the presidency at the university.
In its ruling, the board instructed that Guru and his running mate’s names be included on the list of presidential candidates.
