The Interior Minister has announced that Eid-Ul-Fitr, which falls on Sunday, March 30, 2025, will be observed as a public holiday.
In addition, President John Dramani Mahama has declared Monday, March 31, and Tuesday, April 1, as public holidays to allow for an extended celebration.
A statement from the ministry emphasized that the decision was made in the public interest, in line with Section 2 of the Public Holidays and Commemorative Days Act (Act 601).
The announcement urges the public to observe the designated holidays nationwide.
Eid-Ul-Fitr is an important Islamic festival that marks the end of Ramadan, the holy month of fasting observed by Muslims worldwide. It is a day of joy, gratitude, and community, where Muslims break their month-long fast with prayers, feasting, and acts of charity.
The festival begins with a special prayer, known as Salat al-Eid, performed in congregation at mosques or open fields.
It is also a time for giving Zakat al-Fitr, a form of charity meant to help the less fortunate celebrate the occasion.
Families and friends gather to share festive meals, exchange gifts, and express gratitude to Allah for the strength and discipline shown during Ramadan.
The date of Eid-Ul-Fitr varies each year, as it follows the Islamic lunar calendar and is determined by the sighting of the new moon.
