Outspoken media personality Bridget Otoo has shared her strong disapproval of the Ghana Medical Association’s (GMA) decision to refrain from participating in the nationwide strike planned by Organised Labour, set for October 10, 2024.
Otoo, known for her bold commentary on social and political issues, took to social media to express her frustration, pointing out the glaring irony in the GMA’s stance, given the ongoing environmental crisis caused by illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.

In her post, Otoo made a pointed statement: “The institution that believes in miracles has taken over the institution that is supposed to use science in making decisions!”
Her comments directly called out the GMA, an organization that, as she emphasized, is expected to prioritize science and the well-being of citizens above all else.
Bridget found it bewildering that the medical body, which should be at the forefront of advocating for public health, especially considering the adverse health impacts of galamsey, would choose to stay out of a strike aimed at addressing the environmental degradation caused by this illicit activity.
Her criticism did not stop there. Otoo further remarked on the irony of religious institutions being more progressive in their stance on galamsey compared to the GMA.
“Even religious bodies have seen the lights when it comes to galamsey!” she exclaimed, underscoring her belief that the medical association should take a stronger, science-based stand against illegal mining activities that are endangering water bodies, farmlands, and ultimately the health of Ghana’s citizens.
The crux of Otoo’s argument was the perceived failure of the GMA to live up to its responsibility.

She likened their inaction to a reliance on miracles, rather than the science-driven decision-making the association is known for. This was summed up in her closing statement: “#FreeTheCitizens #StopGalamseyNow.”
The nationwide strike, which is being led by Organised Labour, is primarily aimed at pressuring the government to take stronger measures against illegal mining.
Despite the overwhelming support from various labor unions, the GMA’s decision to abstain has sparked considerable public debate, with many, including Otoo, questioning the association’s priorities.
Meanwhile, in a new development, the planned nationwide strike, initially set to begin on October 10, 2024, has been suspended.
The strike was called in response to the government’s perceived inaction in curbing the destructive effects of illegal mining, also known as galamsey, on the country’s rivers and forest reserves.
However, following recent discussions, the government has stepped up with new measures, leading to a temporary suspension of the industrial action.
The announcement of the strike on October 1 sent ripples across the nation. Organised Labour had made it clear that the ongoing devastation caused by illegal mining was a direct threat to the country’s natural resources and its people.
The group’s demands included immediate and tangible action from the government to stop mining activities in and around key water bodies and forest reserves.
