Entertainment analyst George Quaye has pushed back against claims that musicians exploit churches, arguing that many leave because they are not financially supported.
His response follows recent remarks by Pastor Chris Oyakhilome, who accused secular artists of using the church as a stepping stone before abandoning it for mainstream success.
Speaking on Hitz FM, Quaye dismissed Pastor Chris’s claims, stating that churches themselves are to blame for musicians leaving.
He highlighted that many churches fail to provide financial stability for their instrumentalists and singers, making it unsustainable for them to remain.
“If I start giving my talent to the church and I am growing, meanwhile the church is not paying me for the guitar I am playing, and I get a gig somewhere, shouldn’t I go?” he questioned.
“Gospel musicians will also travel to perform in churches, and they don’t even pay them well. What are you saying? That they should continue to starve and die?”
Quaye emphasized that churches generate significant revenue but rarely invest in the welfare of the musicians who contribute to their worship experiences.
He criticized religious institutions for failing to put instrumentalists on structured payrolls, making it difficult for them to sustain their livelihoods solely through church performances.
