Media personality Okatakyie Afrifa Mensah has been released following his sudden arrest by security operatives on Wednesday, March 19, 2025. His detention sparked widespread condemnation, particularly from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and advocates for press freedom.
Afrifa Mensah, known for hosting the popular social media show FOR THE RECORDS, was reportedly apprehended shortly after completing an exam, a move that many viewed as excessive.
Reacting to the incident, NPP National Organiser Henry Nana Boakye strongly criticized the arrest in a Facebook post, describing it as “completely unnecessary and unwarranted.” He expressed gratitude to those who intervened to secure Afrifa’s release and condemned any attempts to suppress free speech under the pretext of investigations.
“We have just left the premises of National Security, and it is very disappointing to say that the arrest of Okatakyie Afrifa after his exams this evening was completely unnecessary and unwarranted.
“Thanks to the efforts of several individuals who intervened, he has been released. Free speech cannot be suppressed under the guise of an investigation. If that is the case, then National Security should be prepared to arrest all of us,” Boakye stated.
The circumstances surrounding Afrifa Mensah’s arrest remain unclear, but the swift response from political figures and media advocates highlights growing concerns about press freedom and the rights of journalists in Ghana.
