Sarkodie has added his voice to a new campaign on social media, powered by the hashtag #FixTheTemaMotorway.
The Tema Motorway, officially known as the N1 Highway is a 19-kilometer (12 mi) highway that links Tema to Accra—the capital of Ghana. It is the only motorway in Ghana.
The road has become deplorable in recent times and has been claiming lives on a daily basis via ghastly accidents. Online portal Ghana Mu Nsem highlighted the deplorable state of the road and drew Sarkodie’s attention to use his influence to urge the leaders to rehabilitate the road immediately.

Sarkodie, who has spent almost his entire life in Tema, where he honed his craft, gladly accepted the ‘offer’ and immediately tweeted that the Motorway needs urgent attention.
In November 1965, the Tema Motorway was inaugurated for public use, connecting the bustling port city of Tema to Accra. The project was executed during the tenure of Kwame Nkrumah, the first president of Ghana, and was modelled after the Autobahn in Germany.
The primary objective of this initiative was to establish a network of motorways that would interconnect major towns and cities in Ghana. One of the persistent issues that has plagued the motorway since its inception is the absence of street lighting.
Despite being constructed in 1964, the motorway was not equipped with streetlights. In June 2002, the Ghana News Agency reported that the Government of Ghana had allocated 1.95 million cedis to illuminate the motorway, as part of the country’s Golden Jubilee celebrations in 2007.
However, the project encountered several challenges, including cable thefts, which resulted in its suspension. As a result, plain-clothed policemen were deployed to patrol the motorway. Regrettably, some of the installed streetlights on the motorway remain non-functional.
