Renowned human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, SAN, has responded to recent allegations regarding his involvement in a request for assistance from Nigerian internet personality Bobrisky.

In a conversation on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Thursday, October 3, Falana clarified that he has never spoken to or met Bobrisky and addressed false claims circulating on social media.

Falana explained that Bobrisky had allegedly reached out to his son, popular musician and activist Folarin Falana, better known as Falz, earlier this year. According to Falana, Bobrisky had called Falz on May 4, appealing for N3 million to secure placement in a “VIP section” of the prison.

“My son said this guy was appealing to people for assistance and called on May 4 this year – please can you give me N3 million to be placed in a special part of the prison, we call it the VIP section,” Falana recounted. However, Falz quickly refused the request when Bobrisky admitted he was not calling under any formal prison authorization.

“My son asked him, are you calling me under the authorization of the superintendent of prisons? He said no – please don’t call me again. I am unable to assist you in bribing the prison authorities.”

Falana emphasized the integrity behind his son’s response, explaining that Falz warned Bobrisky to follow official procedures if he was to reach out again, but the conversation ended there. Despite this, rumours began to circulate, suggesting that Falana himself had spoken to Bobrisky, leading to defamation of both Falana’s and his son’s names.

“Somebody started releasing tapes somewhere and went out to lampoon and rather defame me by saying the guy has spoken to me,” Falana noted.

Falana made it clear that while they do not intend to pursue criminal charges, they will embark on civil proceedings to restore their reputations if an apology is not issued. “In this case, we are not going to file a criminal complaint.

What we are going to do is to embark on civil proceedings to restore our integrity, my own name and that of my son, so that nobody will simply rush to social media to defame any Nigerian,” he explained.

Falana is demanding a retraction of the false statements and a public apology. He stressed that this was not an unreasonable request, but should the apology not be forthcoming, they will take legal action to protect their names.

“We want to make an example in this case,” Falana stated, adding that the legal route is essential to deter future incidents of defamation against Nigerians.
