Following Nana Akufo-Addo’s final State of the Nation Address (SONA), Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah, the Member of Parliament for Ellembelle, didn’t mince words in his critique of the outgoing president.
While the speech, typically a reflection on the administration’s legacy, covered various topics, one glaring omission stood out to Buah: the much-discussed national cathedral project. This had been a cornerstone promise during Akufo-Addo’s presidency, yet it was conspicuously absent from his address.
As the president addressed lawmakers and dignitaries, Buah pointed out the silence on the cathedral, saying, “It is surprising that, in his final address, the president made no mention of the national cathedral—a project that has dominated public discourse for years.”
The national cathedral envisioned as a monumental symbol of faith and national unity, had been a subject of intense debate, particularly due to the large financial commitments allocated toward it.
Buah’s remarks struck a chord, with several MPs applauding in agreement, recognizing the irony of the omission. He went on to highlight the considerable funds already poured into the project, asking, “Where is the cathedral? After all the funds and promises, there is still no explanation.”
He further suggested that the unfulfilled promise of the cathedral would weigh heavily on the president’s conscience. “He will have to reconcile this with his conscience—and perhaps more importantly, with God,” Buah added, drawing even more applause from opposition members.
