Drake and J. Cole square off in the recently released music video for “First Person Shooter,” which Gibson Hazard directed, just a day after announcing their 2024 tour plans.
The visual, dropped on Wednesday afternoon, is a visual feast filled with references to meme culture and CGI effects. It kicks off in an office setting with Brian Baumgartner, better known as Kevin from “The Office,” listening to the single while engrossed in a first-person shooter game on his work computer.
A call from “The CEO” prompts him to assure them that everyone is diligently working at their desks, though, in reality, his colleagues—namely Drake and J. Cole—are engaged in a lively game of table tennis in a conference room
As the video unfolds, the rappers are seen recreating memes including Spider-Man pointing at Spider-Man and pop culture moments like Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo playing chess from their Louis Vuitton campaign.
Drake pays homage to Michael Jackson in the music video, showcasing moves with a white glove on his right hand. This gesture comes in light of “First Person Shooter” debuting at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, tying Drake with Michael Jackson for the most No. 1 singles among solo males (13) and ranking fourth overall. Drake celebrated this achievement by sharing a photoshopped image of Jackson wearing his OVO merchandise with the caption “Mooooooooood,” tagging J. Cole. (The single marked Drake’s 13th No. 1 and J. Cole’s first upon its October chart debut.)
Remarkably, all 23 tracks from the parent LP, “For All The Dogs,” secured positions in the top 50 of the singles chart during its initial tracking week.
