Former Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame, has accused his successor, Dr. Dominic Ayine, of systematically dropping major criminal cases involving key National Democratic Congress (NDC) figures.
Speaking at a press briefing in Accra on Friday, February 14, Dame criticized the rapid series of case withdrawals, calling them a deliberate attempt to “whitewash” accused officials of wrongdoing.
“Dr. Ayine was sworn in as Attorney-General on Wednesday, January 22, 2025. On Friday, January 24, 2025, he caused to be filed a notice of abandonment of the appeal by the State in Republic versus Ato Forson and 2 Others.
On Tuesday, January 28, 2025, he withdrew the case against Dr. Stephen Opuni and 2 Others, resulting in the complete whitewash of their crimes by an acquittal and discharge through the backdoor,” Dame stated.
The accusations come amidst heightened political tension, as several cases involving financial crimes and corruption had been pending under the previous administration.

Among the dropped cases was that of former Minority Leader and current Finance Minister, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, who was facing charges related to an ambulance procurement deal.
Additionally, former NDC Chairman, Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo, and Communications Officer, Anthony Kwaku Boahen, were cleared of charges linked to a leaked tape allegedly discussing political violence.
The former AG further alleged that Dr. Ayine acted swiftly to ensure the complete discharge of former Bank of Ghana official, Dr. Johnson Pandit Asiama, who had been implicated in the collapse of UniBank and UT Bank.
“On January 29, 2025, he entered another withdrawal in Republic versus Ofosu-Ampofo & Another, again resulting in an acquittal and discharge of the accused.
On January 30, 2025, Dr. Ayine withdrew two different cases against Dr. Johnson Pandit Asiama, resulting in his acquittal and discharge in one and a discharge in the other,” Dame detailed.
