Do It Yourself – Richie Mensah Calls for Self-Reliance in the Creative Arts

Lynx Entertainment CEO Richie Mensah has urged his fellow industry players to focus on self-reliance and stop waiting for government intervention to drive the success of the creative arts sector.

In an interview on Hitz FM on January 23, 2025, Mensah shared insights from his personal journey, stressing the importance of taking action rather than relying on external help.

“Stop looking for help from the government and do it yourself,” Mensah said, reflecting on how he was able to secure a distribution deal. “To be able to get this distribution deal set up, I had to travel a lot and see how it was done in other countries.”

He pointed out that in all his travels, one consistent observation stood out: the success of industries, especially in entertainment, comes from the private sector’s efforts, not waiting for the government to step in.

“One thing I noticed everywhere I go is nobody is waiting on their government to help them. The private sector is doing great, and based on how the private sector is performing, the government gives support,” he explained.

Mensah went on to challenge industry professionals who expect the government to come to their aid. “Why are you waiting for the government? Do something for yourself, and anything that comes after that becomes a bonus.

“But if you are sitting there waiting for a government that is only there for four years to suddenly care so much about your sector and transform your life, it’s not going to happen,” he said.

He also made a comparison to the entertainment industry in the U.S., which is thriving through private sector efforts, and how the government then recognizes and supports it. “California has a higher GDP than Texas, which means when you are sitting in Washington, you will understand that entertainment is bringing us more in Texas than oil.

“So, when we entertainers start doing things properly, like stop swerving taxes, and we start making a certain amount of money in revenue, the government will realise that they will make more money from the creative arts industry if they invest in it,” he said.
