The story of the mother of rap icon Tupac Shakur, Afeni Shakur Davis, is being told in a new documentary called “Dear Mama: The Saga of Afeni & Tupac Shakur,” which premieres on FX on April 21 and will be available to stream on Hulu.
Afeni Shakur, had a remarkable story that inspired her son’s work and fostered his legacy for decades after he was slain. Before dying, Afeni Shakur was a political activist who took on the NYPD while facing a 350-year sentence and was pregnant with Tupac.
She was a former Black Panther who joined the party as a teenager and was notorious for facing a 350-year jail sentence while pregnant with her son.
“I was running around with militants, trying to be badder than I was, trying to stay up later than I should,” she said in the 2005 interview. She was died on May 2, 2016 at age 69.
Tupac Shakur wrote a love letter to his mother in 1995, which he turned into the song “Dear Mama.” The song pulled no punches and openly admitted that Afeni Shakur had an addiction to crack while struggling as “a poor single mother on welfare.”
Despite the challenges she endured, Tupac referred to her as a “Black queen” and ended the song with the promise, “You are appreciated.”
The official trailer for the documentary has been released, and it promises to tell the story of Afeni Shakur’s life and legacy, as well as her relationship with her son Tupac. The trailer features interviews with people who knew Afeni Shakur, including her daughter Sekyiwa Shakur and Tupac’s childhood friend E.D.I. Mean.
“Dear Mama: The Saga of Afeni & Tupac Shakur” promises to be a powerful tribute to a woman who embodied strength, resilience, wisdom, and love. She was a pioneer for social change and was committed to building a more peaceful world. Her spirit will forever inspire all of those who had the honor and privilege of knowing her.
