Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Minister of State for Government Communications, has weighed in on the removal of former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, describing it as a routine leadership change rather than a personal decision against him.
Speaking in an interview on Channel One TV, Kwakye Ofosu acknowledged Dampare’s contributions to the Ghana Police Service, stating, “We can only wish Dampare well and thank him for his services.
“With his experience, he remains valuable and should be in high demand in other areas where his expertise is needed.”
He further explained that such transitions are a normal part of governance, as new leaders often restructure institutions to align with their vision.
“A new leader often makes changes to align key institutions, like the security services, with their vision for the country. This is not personal; it is simply part of governance,” he said.
Dr. Dampare’s removal comes amid President John Dramani Mahama’s ongoing security sector reforms.
Appointed as IGP in 2021, Dampare spearheaded notable policing reforms, including community engagement initiatives and internal discipline measures within the service.
In his place, President Mahama has appointed Commissioner of Police (COP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno, who was officially sworn in on Friday, March 14.
