In a significant legal development, Justice Alexander Owoeye of the Federal High Court in Lagos has dismissed a fundamental rights suit filed by Nigerian social media personality Okuneye Idris Olanrewaju, popularly known as Bobrisky, against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The court ruling came after Bobrisky sought declaratory and injunctive reliefs, alleging that the EFCC had violated his fundamental rights.
However, Justice Owoeye, after evaluating the evidence presented by the applicant, determined that the claims lacked merit. According to the judge, Bobrisky failed to provide credible evidence to substantiate the accusations levelled against the EFCC.
In his judgment, Justice Owoeye stated, “Having evaluated the evidence placed before this Court by the Applicant, it is evident that the Applicant has failed to provide credible evidence to justify the award of the declaratory and injunctive reliefs sought by him.”
The judge further explained that the claims of fundamental rights violations against the EFCC were not supported by the affidavit evidence submitted, resulting in the dismissal of the case.
Following the judgment, Dele Oyewale, the spokesman for the EFCC, shared his reaction, stating, “The claims against the 1st and 2nd Respondents lack merit and are accordingly dismissed.”
This statement reflected the EFCC’s satisfaction with the court’s ruling, reinforcing their stance on the matter.
Bobrisky, a figure known for his controversial online persona, had initially approached the court, accusing the EFCC of infringing on his rights.
In a dramatic narrative shared on social media, Bobrisky recounted an incident where he was violently removed from a plane ready for takeoff, an experience he claims left him physically and emotionally distressed.
“The EFCC and other security agencies in Nigeria are violators of human rights,” Bobrisky wrote, his frustration evident.
