Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick has found himself at the center of controversy after making dismissive remarks about potential Social Security check delays.
Speaking in a recent interview, Lutnick suggested that Americans should not complain if their payments don’t arrive on time, implying that only fraudsters would be concerned.
“If you don’t get your Social Security check, shut the f*** up,” Lutnick reportedly said, citing his 94-year-old mother-in-law as an example of someone who wouldn’t be bothered by a missed payment, assuming it would arrive later.
His comments come as the Social Security Administration (SSA) undergoes significant restructuring, which includes cutting 7,000 jobs.
While officials claim the move is aimed at reducing fraud, critics argue that it could lead to severe delays in distributing monthly benefits to nearly 69 million Americans, many of whom rely on these payments as their primary source of income.
Bill Sweeney of AARP condemned Lutnick’s remarks, emphasizing that Social Security is not a luxury but a lifeline for millions.
Statistics from the SSA reveal that 15% of older women and 12% of older men rely on Social Security for at least 90% of their income, making any delay financially devastating.
Despite growing backlash, the administration stands by the restructuring plan, arguing that fraudulent claims cost the system billions each year.
However, official data suggests that fraud makes up only a tiny fraction of Social Security disbursements, raising concerns that the real burden of these cuts will fall on law-abiding beneficiaries.
