Private legal practitioner Maurice Ampaw shed light on the legal advantages of customary marriage, especially for men seeking more flexibility in their relationships.
Ampaw suggested that single men should seriously consider adopting customary marriage as a way to legally marry multiple women, highlighting its appeal to those who wish to avoid the complications of conventional marriages.
“Under customary law, you can marry as many women as you want. That is why, these days, some men don’t want ordinance marriage.
To avoid the side chick saga, go the customary way so we can have more side chicks promoted to wives because all of them can be registered,” Ampaw remarked during the interview, suggesting that customary law gives men the freedom to marry more than one woman without facing the societal or legal obstacles associated with a formal marriage under the Marriage Ordinance.
He further explained, “Just go to the Registrar General, pick a form, and fill it out. The procedure is simple.
One thing you have to know is that the right to marry more women is taken away from you.”
This statement points to one of the major distinctions between the two types of marriages: customary marriages allow multiple wives, while a marriage under the Ordinance eliminates that option.
