US rapper Chance The Rapper has voiced his support for an online movement initiated by concerned Ghanaians protesting the detention of individuals involved in the anti-galamsey demonstrations.
The movement, amplified by the hashtag #FreeTheCitizens, has gained significant traction as Ghanaians, including celebrities, rally against the arrest of over 30 protesters.
Among those apprehended are high-profile activists such as Ralph St. Williams, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, and Ama Governor.
The protesters were taken into custody after a demonstration at the 37 Military Intersections escalated into clashes with police.
They have been charged with unlawful assembly, assaulting a police officer, and conspiracy to commit a crime, though all have pleaded not guilty.
The protest, part of the larger three-day “Stop the Galamsey and Re-Occupy Julorbi House” campaign, was organized to draw attention to illegal mining (galamsey) and its detrimental effects on the environment.
Despite the arrests, support for the movement continues to grow, with international figures like Chance The Rapper joining the chorus of voices calling for justice.
This show of solidarity from the US rapper highlights the global attention the anti-galamsey protests have garnered, further amplifying the calls for the release of the detained protesters.
Chance The Rapper first visited Ghana in January 2022. He made the trip during the New Year holidays and was vocal about his deep connection to the country after his visit.
During his time in Ghana, he explored various cultural and historical sites, met with local artists and musicians, and expressed his admiration for the country’s rich heritage.
