Tiwa Savage is known for her professionalism, grace, and empowering music. But behind the glittering facade of fame, Tiwa has experienced her fair share of heartbreak, judgment, and personal turmoil.
In a conversation on The Receipts Podcast, she opened up about how the collapse of her marriage to Tunji ‘TeeBillz’ Balogun and the subsequent public scrutiny led to a drastic transformation in her life.
“When I came out, I was Nigeria’s sweetheart,” Tiwa recalled, her voice reflecting a bittersweet nostalgia. She remembered how the public had embraced her when she first stepped into the limelight.

“I did everything by the book,” she said. She went to university, avoided being a ‘baby mama,’ got married, and then had a child—essentially following the path society often applauds. But her carefully planned life would soon take an unexpected turn.
After the heartbreak of her divorce, Tiwa’s persona shifted dramatically. The public scrutiny and relentless judgment took a toll on her mental health, leading her to embrace a new, more rebellious identity.
“It made me depressed for so long,” she admitted. “It got me angry, then I became the ‘African Bad Girl.’”

This transformation wasn’t just about her emotional state; it was a visible change in how Tiwa presented herself to the world.
She began to step away from the polished, controlled image she had once carefully curated and leaned into a bolder, unapologetic version of herself.
She started getting tattoos, wearing short skirts, and sporting bikinis. “I was just wild,” she revealed, describing how she adopted a more daring style that contrasted sharply with her earlier, more refined public image.
